Tips for Improving Home and Business Air Quality

In this blog entry, the professional Denver home air duct cleaning and Denver commercial HVAC system cleaning service here at Air Improvement Denver will detail 3 highly useful hacks for ensuring cleaner air inside your property.

Air FIlter Changing Regularity

Many people neglect changing their air filters. Air filter changes simply don’t land at the top of most household or business priorities. We recommend setting a reminder alarm on your phone on the first day of the month to remind you to inspect your filter to see if it needs to be replaced. We recommend holding your filter to a light, and if you can’t see any light through the filter screen, it’s time to change it. Most filters need to be changed every 1-2 months. Store your air filters where you can easily see and retrieve them. Do not store replacement filters in a hard to see or retiree area, but rather keep them in a laundry area or another storage area that you visit regularly, simply to function as a reminder to change old air filters for new ones. This will drastically improve home air quality, especially if you rarely or almost never change air filters.

Removing Synthetic Air Fresheners

Many people like to use scented candles or air fresheners to improve the smell in their property. However, many of these items have toxic chemicals that worsen home air quality. We recommend ONLY burning candles made of soy or beeswax. Furthermore, as much as possible, use unscented household cleaner and laundry detergents. Avoid spraying artificial fragrances to mask musty odors – and in general try to avoid synthetic fragrances, which are loaded with hormone-disrupting phthalate chemicals.

Opening Windows

Many modern home or work spaces are constructed in an airtight fashion. This improves energy efficiency, but worsens air quality. Without proper periodic ventilation, moisture, odors, and household contaminants will build up, ruining air quality and even causing mold or other problems that affect respiratory health. We recommend opening your windows wide for at least a few minutes a day to change your stale and old air for fresh air. Keep in mind though, that if you live in an area prone to intense plant or tree allergens, or if you are particularly sensitive to Spring or SUmmer allergies, that opening your windows might let pollen into your home. It’s best to pair this healthy practice with installation of a high quality air filter inside your HVAC system, as well as getting your HVAC system professionally cleaned and sanitized.
